Welcome to our new Glasgow Flat

Written by
Calums Cabin is proud to announce the official opening of Calums Cabin Glasgow Flat. Thanks to your generous support, the charity has been able to fund the purchase of a new flat in Finnieston to provide free accommodation for families travelling from the Highlands and Islands, Aberdeen and the Grampians to Glasgow for cancer treatment...
Many children with cancer and their families are required to travel to Glasgow’s primary treatment centres at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and the Royal Hospital for Children for specialist care which is unavailable at home. The Dean Family from Culloden stayed at Calum’s Cabin Glasgow Flat over Christmas this year whilst their youngest daughter, Amy (5) received treatment for Leukaemia. Amy was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in August 2017 after a family holiday with Mum, Denise, Dad, Darren and older sister Rebecca and has undergone eight months of chemotherapy since. Denise said “It was hard to know that we would have to be away from home throughout Amy’s treatment and away from Rebecca (9) for such a long time but knowing we had somewhere to stay and where family could visit, made it bearable. When we saw the flat, we couldn’t believe it – it looked like a show flat but it was welcoming, relaxing and felt like a proper home from home in no time. Amy could lie out on the couch and watch TV, we could make dinner, shut the door and have peace and quiet – it allowed us to cope in our own way and feel some kind of normality. Duncan, Caroline and Jenna from Calum’s Cabin were amazing. We couldn’t believe that people we didn’t know were there to help us, especially after what they’d been through themselves”.

Our luxurious two-bedroom, two bathroom flat has been designed with families in mind, providing relaxing and comfortable self-catering accommodation for up to six people. Located within a few miles of both hospitals, the flat looks and feels like home allowing families to be together and feel supported without the burden of mounting accommodation and travel costs. Our ambassador, John Amabile leant his expertise to this new project, designing the flat to the highest standards.

We are asking individuals, workplaces and organisations to get involved and support the charity this year to help us continue to fund Calums Cabin, Calums Cabin Cottage and the Calums Cabin Glasgow Flat. Please sign up today for The Kiltwalk in Glasgow on 29th April/ Aberdeen on 3rd June/ Dundee on 19th August/ Edinburgh on 16th September. Last year, the event raised over £100,000 for Calum’s Cabin thanks to just over 350 walkers who took part. Caroline said, “We are so grateful for all of the incredible support we receive and are proud to be able to share our latest addition to Calum’s legacy, the Glasgow Flat. Thank you to everyone who has supported us and we would love you to join our Kiltwalk team this year”. Thanks to the incredible support of The Hunter Foundation, all funds raised through The Kiltwalk will be topped up by 40% making every penny go even further.
